This past weekend, Seniors John Berns and Emma Stephens, along with PHS Choir Director Mrs. Chase, attended the All-State Illinois Music Education Conference in Peoria. Both students enjoyed two days of intense rehearsals with the most accomplished student musicians in the state under the direction of esteemed guest conductors. To be selected for these groups is a true honor and should be celebrated throughout our community. Emma Stephens was selected for the Honors Chorus and was part of a stirring Finale Concert on Saturday, January 27. She sang in a choir of around 350 other choral students and their director was Dr. Eugene Rogers of Michigan University. The Honors Chorus is the top-selected chorus of the all-state conference and it was a thrill to see her down there in such talented company! John Berns was selected for the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble and performed in the incredible Jazz Concert on Friday night, January 26. Their director was Stacy Cunningham, a well-known choir director at East Leyden High School in Franklin Park Illinois. John sang in a highly-selective group of 24 students from around the state with a passion for vocal jazz. He was also a featured soloist on one of the songs. In addition, John also was selected to represent ILMEA District 5 in the National Anthem auditions which form the field of students selected to sing the National Anthem at future IHSA State Championship events. He completed this audition while at All State this past weekend. John also received an Honorable Mention Award for his choral composition, "Easter Hymn" as part of the All-State Composition Contest. While the students were in rehearsal, Mrs. Chase and thousands of other music teachers from around the state participated in professional development and performance sessions. This is a great weekend for the teachers to gather new ideas on how to best teach our students! Words cannot express what a huge honor this is for these students and for Pana Schools. Please enjoy these pictures and video links and make sure to congratulate Emma and John, our ILLINOIS ALL STATE MUSICIANS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHVVIDfy2TU https://youtu.be/kKorSxDTmeM
