Friday, October 18th Mrs Rupperts Animal Science got to spend the day outside of the clsssroom learning about 2 local animal operations.
First stop, Ogle Genetics - family owned farm specializing in high quality show pigs. Students got to learn about the process of their operation from breeding, farrowing, weaning and sale/show preparation for pigs. We got lucky and students were able to observe a sow being artificially inseminated, most common breeding practice for swine operations.
Second stop, Bauman Dairy Farm - family owned dairy farm that supplies for Prairie Farms. Students learned about the operation of standard care for cows, feed requirements, data collection for efficient herd management of illness and breeding seasons. Student were able to see the milking process, which can take up to 2 hours from start to finish. Some were able to get some hands on in the parlor and with the bucket calves. They experienced the process of dumped milk from cows that recently had a calf or have been sick. The dumped milk can be used to feed bucket calves, but does not meet quality standards for human consumption.
Great day of learning in the field and expanding students perspectives of opportunities in the animal industry.
